8 Tips to Save Your Sanity

Navigating the relentless pull of screens, AI, and social media can leave you feeling like you're fighting against an invisible current. Setting and upholding limits around screens is one of the most common, draining challenges I hear from parents—and you certainly don't have to navigate this digital frontier alone.

Here are 8 tips to help manage screens in your home:

1.         Screen-Free Zones and Times – Make the rooms in your house uphold limits for you, e.g., no screens upstairs, at meal times, or at bedtime.  Remember: limits work best when they are for everyone in the house (parents included).

2.         Creation, Communication, or Consumption – Not all screen time is created equal.  Note if your kid is spending hours and hours online creating (yay!), communicating (fine, within limits), or simply consuming (minimize).

3.         What are YOU Doing? – If you are constantly checking your phone for work, what message are you sending? Children do as we do, not as we say. (Difficult to hear, but true).

4.         Get Out! – Plan activities where phone or device usage is minimized.  Water activities (so genius!) or other active activities – hiking, biking, skiing.  Get them on the mountain, in the water, on the trail, and enjoy some family time.

5.         Ask Questions – Get into their screen world by asking quality questions that they want to talk about. To get started, try some of these: What’s your favorite app? How much time do your friends get on their phones? (Don’t believe everything they tell you). Would you show me some of your favorite shorts? When kids feel seen and understood, they are more willing to talk about limits (and cooperate with them)!

6.         Then Listen – Listen to what their answers are to the above questions. Do not comment, do not give them statistics, do not tell them what life was like when you were young; just listen and learn what your kids actually think.

7.        They Are Going to Sneak and Lie – Kids love these devices passionately. Screens make kids feel soothed, connected to friends, and productive—even if those feelings are a digital illusion. Screens are seductive; please do not freak out when you find their phones in their bedroom after hours.

8.         The New Frontier – Nobody has all the answers yet on how to navigate parenting in this unfolding world of technology—screens, apps, AI, you name it. So please, be easy on yourself as you do the best you can with the information you have.

Navigating this digital frontier isn't about achieving perfection or winning every battle; it’s about staying connected, staying curious, and giving yourself a little grace along the way. Take a deep breath, hold your boundaries, and remember that every small step you take toward real-world connection is worth it.
